Two Simple Ways to Understand Your Dreams

When you awake from a dream you may have the temptation to try and figure out what a certain symbol means, or try to decipher the dream as a whole.

First, I’ve really found it helpful to meditate on the details of your dream and rehearse it all the way through as you wake up.  This solidifies the events of the dream into your memory before you start forgetting them.   Dreams are like short stories written in disappearing ink.  Rehearsing your dream by meditating on the details allows you to trace those invisible lines with permanent marker.

Second, after meditating on the details, you give your dream a title.  A title in like a declarative statement that solidifies the transition of your dream into the waking world.  After meditating, it’s the second step to giving life to your dream, and once your dream has life you’re able to solve the mystery it presents.

Another benefit of titling your dream, probably one of the most beneficial, is that when you title your dream you are restating it in the simplest of terms.  A long dream that has a lot of moving parts could easily be given a title by looking for what all those parts have in common.  For example, let’s say you find yourself at work doing something and someone comes in and starts chasing you, then the dream shifts and you suddenly find yourself at your house talking to a friend and someone you don’t know walks through the front door and starts chasing you around your house.  The dream goes on for three or four more scenes, but they all end up with you being chased.  A perfect title for a dream like that might be The Chase.

The example above may seem a bit too obvious and a bit simplistic, but don’t forget that you’re looking at the example totally detached from what’s happening.  You’re not connected to the scenes emotionally or any other way.  It would be quite a different story if you dreamt this and friends and family members were chasing you.  You may concentrate on who was chasing you and why and completely overlook the fact that you were being chased,  This is why it is imperative you take a step back and look at the dream as a whole.  You see things you wouldn’t normally see.
